Another season of spring hockey
The 2008 Quick feet team started the season with 2 losses and a tie. Most would say that wasn't a great start. Now on the other hand I thought that was just what this team needed.
Every practice the kids came to the rink with their hard hats and work boots on ready to put in a hard practice. Everyone knows if you work hard at something you will eventually see good results. We had a lot of really good individual players in the beginning and as we got on the ice more together we became a TEAM. Entering our first couple tournaments the Canlan Spring Showdown and the Dunny's classic, we found ourselves ending up a bit short of the grand prize finishing as finalists. Still a very good accomplishment but our TEAM knew that it was going to take everyone putting in their full effort for the entire game to finish 1st. We had a couple more weekends of hockey to get that GOLD medal around our necks. Entering the Canlan Memorial and the Canlan Bring your Best we achieved our goal, finishig both weekends with a GOLD medal around our necks. Every player in the QF jersey put forth their best effort and contributed to our success. Some games were a lot harder playing short handed with the big bruisers Henry and Brody in the box. Finishing the season with a combined 50 minutes, the penalties were never from a lack of effort. Battling for the puck in the corners, digging for it out in front of the net or possibly laying a body check (haha) usually lead to the box for them. Some games even took some players making heroic plays, one that resembles of the great #8 Alex Ovechkin and the best goal of the year #44 Henry Meulensteen never gave up on the play and as a result he managed to put the puck passed the keeper from his back....WOW, that's all I have to say is WOW.. That's what this team had though, never quit no matter what.
We were down in games by 3 or 4 goals and clawed our way back to get the win. With our season winding down we had one weekend of hockey left entering the Collingwood Blue Thunder cup. We had played Collingwood through out the season a couple of times with an even record coming into the weekend. The Quick Feet team got what they wanted in the finals, Quick Feet vs Blue Thunder. It was a really close game with both teams battling hard and getting some great scoring chances. The bruiser #66 got us on the score board, the Twin Towers Owen Orth and Sam Mirda got rolling together making some nice passes and finishing the shift with a nice wrap around goal. The blue thunder made a push but #31 Nate Bishop shut the door to hold us in there and get the win 4-2. This group of kids was an absolute pleasure to coach, finishing the season 23-6-2 out scoring our opponent 197-66 in 31 games Great job this season boys and have a great summer !!
Thank You to Nick Abell, Chris Lyndon (coaches) Josh Farlow (Team Trainer). What a great bench staff, it was a pleasure to coach along side of you guys. A special thanks to Dave Farley, Brandon Murray and Derek Mathews for stepping in when we were short on the bench, your help was very much appreciated.
Thank you to Holly Mathews our Team Manager, managing a team takes a lot of time and hard work everything was well looked after and organized. Of course a big thank you to all of the parents/new friends couldn`t have asked for better company at the tournaments...Cheers!
Thank you to the Quick Feet organization for giving me the opportunity to coach again this year, this is a well respected group to be a part of,
