Canlan Quest for the Cup
May 11-13

Quickfeet 2006 Minor Peewee team travelled to Toronto to compete in the annual Canlan tournament “Toronto Quest for the Cup” this past weekend.  The Quickfeet team was among 18 skilled teams that competed in their 2006 age grouping.  The tournament was spread out amongst four separate arenas in the area, and we played at three of them.
A rocky start at the Victoria park barn Friday afternoon took place as the team dressed and completed pre-game warm ups to find out that no referees were available to officiate the games at this complex.   Teams poured into the complex to eventually find out that all afternoon games were cancelled due to the scheduling error.  A “tie game” for all teams having their games cancelled was distributed by the tournament staff.  Arriving back Friday evening for our next game was a better experience.  Taking on the Edge Hockey 06 team ended in a close 3-1 loss with our only goal this game going unassisted to (98)Josh Grein.
Saturday’s line up consisted of two Quickfeet games being played, both at the Canlan Ice Sports Complex in Scarborough.  Taking on Hyper Fit Hockey-06 in the early afternoon proved to be a close game, but couldn’t take the win.  Losing 2-1 in this match up wasn’t terrible as the boys were working hard.  Notable mention goes to Quickfeet (88) Jericho McNichol for his bank shot off the glass pillar to put the team on the board.  Next we faced Durham Bulls-06 team.   Unfortunately a big loss for the team 6-1 was had with our only goal going to (17) Kyle Santogrosso late in the third.
Facing The Six-06 for Sunday’s consolation championship was another tight match up where the game ended in a 6-3 loss.  Quickfeet was on the board early in the first period with (96) Ethan McCarey netting a goal, assisted by Jericho McNichol.  Tying up the game in the second, (77) Austin Hibberd Made a sweet tip in from a shot from the top of the circle by defenseman (96) Ethan McCarey.  Into the third, (97) Morgan Armstrong one-timed a nice pass from behind the net compliments of (91) Quinn Habermehl to advance past The Six.  Unfortunately not able to maintain the lead, The Six came back strong and finished the game with a 6-3 victory over Quickfeet.
Being peppered throughout the tournament credit should be given to goaltenders Drew Cribbin, and Ryan Santogrosso for their efforts.
Over all, the Quickfeet team appears to be bonding and figuring things out, and having some fun while trying.  Although most of these kids have not played together before this tournament, they show determination and potential.  The young coaching staff should be able to capitalize on this which could equate to some wins for the team.   The Quickfeet-06 team looks forward to the next tournament in just two weeks when we travel to London to compete in the London Rising Stars tournament.  See you there.
